Course description
This course’s modular, unit-based structure allows for maximum flexibility. A particularly attractive feature of the course is the option to follow one of three specialist HR routes (International, Consulting, Development) in Year Two by studying specialised units. Those wishing not to specialise can follow a generic HR pathway by selecting any unit combination within the Year Two option choices.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) requirements also stipulate that a sequential period of study be undertaken in order for you to gain graduate membership (Grad CIPD). Each year of the programme features a residential weekend, enabling you to complete People Management and Development (Year One) and Research Methods (Year Two) as an integral part of the overall course. Additional Saturday workshops are scheduled in both years of the course to support the residential weekends.
The dissertation gives you the opportunity to link theory with practice within an organisational context. It involves the identification and refinement of an HR problem, undertaking an in-depth literature review, the collection of primary data, and the analysis and evaluation of this data so as to produce a set of implementable and/or secondary recommendations. If you have chosen to follow a named specialist pathway,
your dissertation will be in your chosen specialism.
Career opportunities
The programme is designed for professionals or line managers who have significant human resource responsibility. Students who have successfully completed the course have found it has enabled them to take on
additional responsibilities and/or move onto more senior positions within the HR or Management field.
Typical background of applicant
One of the features of the course is the diversity of the student cohort. You may be working in any sector (private, public or not-for-profit) or industry (government, finance, consultancy, private industry). We
welcome students from any background or academic discipline.
Professional contacts/industry links
The MScHR (part-time) is fully validated by the CIPD. Students who successfully complete the course become Graduate Members of the CIPD. In addition you are guaranteed a fast track to professional membership of the Chartered Management Institute.
