Non-standard entry requirements
To be accepted on to this course, you need to have identified a school willing to offer you a training placement for the RTP course, whereby you will be employed by the school as an unqualified teacher under the terms of the RTP scheme 2 years of Higher Education GCSE C or above in Maths, English and Science
Course units
For the first year there are units on Pedagogy, Creative Practice and Assessment with a double unit on Educational Research and three school experience units. For the second year of the course there are three units consisting of a double unit on Core Subjects (English, Mathematics, and Science), Foundation subjects and a double unit focusing on Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship (EIC). Assessment is by presentation, written assignment, audit or portfolio. The EIC and Core units are assessed at both Level 3 and Masters Level (30 Level 3 or 30 Masters credits).
Course description
The RTP is a modular employment based programme. As an employmentbased route, the majority of the training takes place within schools with students training four days a week in their school. Students also attend the University for one day per week where they follow the course units as outlined above. The needs analysis process prior to the start of the course enables students with prior experience to negotiate their individual training needs.
School-based training is at the core of the programme and is designed to take account of the individual needs of the student, involving the setting up and carrying out of a flexible programme under the guidance of the school-based and university-based tutors.
The course aims to support entry into the teaching profession of creative, competent, flexible and reflective teachers. On successful completion of the first year of the course RTP students will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts (BA Honours) degree in Education. On successful completion of the second year of the course RTP students will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status and awarded a PGCE.
All students entering the course have the possibility of gaining up to 60 credits at Masters level, which can be used by students to count towards the award of full Masters level qualifications (such as the LSBU MA in Education) gained via further study after graduation.
Overview of the school experience
Students undertake a needs analysis before induction, and as part of the induction the student and schoolbased tutor will begin the student’s individual training plan in collaboration with university tutors. The individual training plan outlines the school-based training and is reviewed termly. There are, generally, three stages of training. In stage one the students, under the guidance of the class teacher, work with groups, observe a range of teaching and learning situations and begin to teach whole class lessons. In the second training stage the student team teaches with the class teacher and in the third training stage the student has full responsibility for the class. Progression through the stages will be dependent upon individual needs.

Funding: A contribution towards school employment costs is made by the TDA for students employed within the state sector. Although this funding is not available to independent schools, applications are accepted from students in the independent sector where their schools are able to support their application for a place on the RTP programme.
