Course description
As threats from cyber attacks increase in quantity and sophistication, protection of information assets has become of critical importance. IA is about justified confidence in security measures and management processes for protection of valuable information. It emphasises successful integration of security enabling technologies with business processes and good management practices. Developed with IA specialists from government, industry and professional bodies, the MSc IA provides knowledge and skills to address a range of IA issues facing 21st century organisations.
Upon completion of the courses students will be able to:
– Develop a broad understanding of security enabling technologies
– Appreciate the evolving cyber security threats and determine their impacts
– Understand the nature and role of IA including legal and regulatory compliance and business continuity plans
– Use information risk management techniques to objectively incorporate security knowledge into management decisions
– Formulate/scrutinise security policies
– Develop a holistic view of information security management
– Undertake relevant research.

Course units in profile
Security: Provides solid understanding of security enabling technologies, analyses current security threats, critically assess appropriate countermeasures. IA and Compliance: Rigorous exposition of concepts, processes and practices underlying IA, covers compliance with legal, regulatory and information security standards. Information Risk Management: Methods, tools, and practices for managing risks arising from information security threats, with emphasis on practical skills for identifying threats, analysing business impact, calculating risks and evaluating appropriate treatments.
Strategic Management of Information Systems: Theoretical and prescriptive knowledge to address the critical planning, organisational and control issues facing today’s information systems.
Web Technologies: Knowledge and skills required to handle, manage and critically assess the WWW and associated technologies and issues. Advanced Networking and Database Connectivity: Skills to design networked IT systems, host web database applications for both wired and mobile devices. Software Security: Develops capabilities and skills in using of knowledge about security attacks combined with ‘information risk management’ techniques to evaluate software security and enhance the process of producing secure and resilient software applications.
