The Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences has a growing and dynamic culture with a wide range of academic interests, highly qualified staff and more than 100 postgraduate students. Our interdisciplinary research draws on a range of subject, methodological and theoretical expertise, and it gained recognition for national and international quality of its work in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise: in Social Policy, Town and Country Planning and English.

The Faculty also has recognition for ESRC +3 for PhDs in the areas of Sociology and Social Policy. This is reflected in the wide range of external funding received from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Department for International Development (DfID), charities, government departments and local authorities.

We offer research supervision in a wide variety of areas, including Education, European Studies, International Development, Poverty, Family, Race and Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality, Housing and Planning, Regeneration, Leisure Studies, Media Arts, Music and Dance Cultures, Digital Media, Politics, and Psychology and Crime. Studies are supported with a range of supplementary activities. Research projects are expected to contain material that promises to make an original contribution to knowledge within the subject area.
