Profile
Research lies at the heart of the University’s academic provision, informing and underpinning our teaching and contributing to the depth and breadth of knowledge and understanding in a wide range of subjects. Our international community of students and scholars, based at the heart of London, work within a stimulating atmosphere where teaching excellence combines with first-rate research.
LSBU’s dynamic academic community combines full and part-time undergraduate and postgraduates, research scholars working towards MPhil and PhD degrees, and visiting students from industry or the public sector who come to study ‘add-on’ professional development and short courses.
Our postgraduate courses are vocationally orientated, developed specifically to impact upon employment, career prospects and lifetime learning opportunities. Our flexible approach means we continue to keep apace with the requirementsof industry and the business sector.
Much of our postgraduate and professional work takes place in the Keyworth Centre on our main Southwark campus. This award winning complex is situated in the heart of our campus and offers first class teaching facilities.
Research activities
Our varied research strengths include a wide range of disciplines and interests in the fields of: science, engineering, the built environment, business and management, social science, education, media and performing arts, and health.
LSBU notably gained significant recognition in the 2001 Research Assessment. Exercise (RAE) carried out by the HEFCE. The results gave the University five 4-rated, seven 3a-rated and two 3b-rated research quality grades, confirming our position for research in the UK.
Funding to support our research comes from a variety of sources including the research councils, the European Union, UK and overseas industry, government departments and charities. Closely allied to this, we are currently involved in a number of Knowledge Transfer Programmes (KTP), which enable research findings to be transferred into the industrial environment. We are one of the leading universities in the UK for KTP and the leader amongst London’s universities. Over the last 20 years we have been involved in over 100 KTP projects with both small and medium-sized enterprises and larger companies.
