Course description

If you want to combine your aspiration to work in the financial or commercial environment with a strong ability to solve problems through modelling, quantitative analysis and strategic planning, this course is ideal. The course provides a unique diet of international business related subject matter and is based on the solid foundations of applied quantitative studies in finance/econometrics. It is designed to enable you to learn as flexibly as possible.

The course provides a deeper understanding, knowledge and critical awareness of current problems, solutions, and practice in selected fields of quantitative finance and business analysis. On completion of the course your mathematical, statistical, computational, communication, analytical and problem solving skills will be substantially enhanced. You will thus be able to apply a wide range of quantitative and analytical techniques, tools and strategies to the fields of finance and business, and be able to merge theory and practice in organisational settings and consultancy situations in the financial sector.

It is intended to deliver the bulk of the teaching with the use of a combination of traditional and e-learning approaches. This will consist of a series of one day, or weekend, short courses for the delivery of each unit. In addition, the short-courses will be enhanced by interactive CD-ROM-based course notes, podcasts, and extensive use of LSBU’s Blackboard teaching and learning environment. Strong emphasis will also be placed on the use of contemporary IT-based solutions and software to support your learning and problem solving.

Career opportunities

After successfully completing the course you will be able to seek employment as a junior quantitative analyst in a number of sectors including, finance, financial econometrics and business analysis. Alternatively, you may be able to pursue MPhil/PhD studies in quantitative finance and/or management science, which could also yield substantial academic and monetary rewards.

Typical background of applicant

Applicants are expected to hold a British Honours degree or equivalent in mathematics/statistics, engineering, economics, or physics. We also welcome applications from those with a qualification in business studies with a numerate pathway such as finance or management science.
