Course description
Approach – the challenges of management
One of the most important skills for managers is to be able to decide on a course of action and to implement the necessary steps. Often this takes place in a situation of uncertainty, limited information, ambiguity and conflict. The final year of the MA in Management challenges students as managers to deal with such types of situations across functional and subject area boundaries.
There is a strong emphasis on team learning and project work, on personal development and on taking the students’ research skills to Masters level.
Expected Outcomes
Students should see a noticeable enhancement in their capabilities, particularly in the capacity to identify, confront and deal with both problems and opportunities. This change should be detectable for their organisation – they should be in a position to suggest and make value-adding changes through the dissertation project and in other respects.
Students will work in learning support groups and there will be a strong emphasis on ‘live’ case study work to integrate the different aspects of management, and to provide convincing solutions. In parallel with this, lecture sessions will provide the underpinning knowledge. This will be assessed through a Business Impact Submission, and a Theoretical Reflection on the CMI’s Chartered Manager Award.
Dissertation
This will be a 15,000 word project, based on a work-related management issue. In addition to the formal course timetable, a number of university-wide workshops and support for students, e.g. IT, Examinations Technique, etc, may be accessed by course participants.
Professional contacts/industry links
The course is accredited by the CMI. Successful students will also gain the relevant CMI level 7 award in Strategic Management and Leadership, and will have the opportunity to pursue the Institute’s Chartered Manager award.
