Non-standard entry requirements

If you do not already have a Diploma you can still access the degree pathway by attending a bridging unit. This is called Evaluation for Level H (Level 3 study) which prepares you for study at degree level. There are no credits attached to this unit.

More details are available in the Continuing Professional Development prospectus which can be accessed from the LSBU website www.lsbu.ac.uk.You may do units in any order apart from the Integrating Study which must be the final unit of the BSc (Hons) course.

To gain the BSc (Hons) you require 120 credits at level H (3).


Course description

This course will prepare you to be a critical and reflective practitioner and to be competent at providing high-quality care within an integrated hospital or community setting. You will be enabled to meet the needs and expectations of child-bearing women and their families from varying cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The course is designed for you to identify your personal learning needs in relation to your current or intended area of practice. The range and flexibility of the units of study enable you to practice in a way that enhances care provision and your career satisfaction. You are encouraged to discuss your intended pathway with the Course Leader to ensure that the units you choose are suitable for your needs.

This course is flexible in that it allows you to exit at certain points to suit your needs. You have five years to complete from enrolling on the first unit of study. If you already have credits from another university or feel that you have work experience that can be accredited (APEL), these may be transferable and count towards the total for your course.

Through gaining the BSc (Hons) in Professional Midwifery Practice you will be demonstrating a commitment towards Personal and Professional Development in relation to Agenda for Change and the Knowledge and Skills Framework There are many specialist areas in which midwives with BSc (Hons) and Higher Awards practice, such as Midwifery-led Care, Teenage Pregnancy, Smoking Cessation, Practice Development and as a Consultant Midwife.

Typical background of applicant

Applicants need to be a registered midwife with 120 credits at Level two (Diploma) and also have at least six months practice experience.

You may also be considered if you have a minimum of 60 credits but need to discuss this with the Course Leader. Successful completion of the unit Evaluation for Level H (three) Study.
