There are three Primary PGCE courses run at LSBU: PGCE Early Years (full-time only), PGCE Primary (full-time only) and PGCE Primary Flexible (full and part-time). The full-time courses run over a 38 week period and to conform to the official requirements, 18 weeks of the course take place in school including three weeks in an alternative educational setting. The Primary Flexible parttime option runs over two academic years, with typical attendance on two full days per week, interspersed with periods of three, six and seven weeks full-time attendance in schools, as well as three weeks in an alternative educational setting.

Course description

The course is taught through lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials. We aim to encourage creativity, reflective pedagogy and sensitivity to educational issues. We provide a learning community that actively challenges inequality and injustice. You are encouraged to make links between the theoretical and practical elements of the course. The course uses an interactive model of teaching and learning. You will engage in subject enquiry at your own level to inform your understanding of effective methods of teaching and learning and be taught how to apply these in school. Individual teaching sessions are used as starting points to further investigation by students.

All students will have experience in at least two schools, allowing experience of working in the relevant age phases. Students are placed in schools that will provide them with a variety of experiences including size, organisation and location. All students entering the course have the possibility of gaining up to 75 credits at Masters level, which can be used by students to count towards the award of full Masters level qualifications (such as the LSBU MA in Education Course) gained via further study after graduation.

Career opportunities

Employment prospects for graduates of the PGCE course are generally good. Although we pride ourselves in providing teachers for London schools, successful students enter the teaching profession in a variety of schools within the UK and abroad.

Typical background of applicant

We welcome applicants who have experience of and commitment to working with learners in a formal or informal setting, and an appreciation of diversity and how equality is promoted through education. All applicants need to have passes in Maths, English and Science at GCSE Grade C level or equivalent as well as a first degree at the time of entry to the course.
