Course description

The GTP is a modular employmentbased programme. As an employmentbased route, school-based training is at the core of the programme and is designed to take account of the individual needs of the student, setting up and carrying out a comprehensive programme under the guidance of the school-based and university-based tutors. The course will prepare you to meet the challenge of teaching mathematics in inner city comprehensive schools serving diverse communities. The university-based programme includes a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials. The course aims to support entry into the teaching profession of creative, competent, flexible and reflective teachers.

You will be supported in developing mathematics subject knowledge and ICT skills as appropriate throughout the course. All students entering the course have the possibility of gaining up to 60 credits at Masters level, which can be used by students to count towards the award of full Masters level qualifications (such as the LSBU MA in Education) gained via further study after graduation.

Overview of the school experience

Students undertake a needs analysis before induction and as part of the induction the student and school-based tutor will begin the student’s individual training plan in collaboration with university tutors. The individual training plan outlines the school-based training and is reviewed termly. School-based training activities include: classroom teaching, self-evaluation, personal tutorials, action planning and target setting. Each trainee teacher must have experience in at least two schools including both Key Stage Three and Key Stage Four teaching.

Career opportunities

The course has excellent employment opportunities and demand for graduates of the course is high.

Typical background of applicant

All applicants need to have passes in Maths and English at GCSE Grade C level or equivalent as well as a first degree at the time of entry to the course.

Professional contacts/industry links

The GTP course is accredited by OFSTED. Graduates of the GTP course are recommended for Qualified Teacher Status. Where a sufficient standard is reached in the academic aspects of the course, a PGCE will also be awarded.
