My LSBU…
Lucy Walsh

MSc Paediatric Advanced Nurse Practice (Leadership and Expert Practice)

My life at LSBU

I travel to LSBU by tube and usually meet friends for coffee at Cafe Pronto before class. At lunchtime we all head back to Cafe Pronto or to the Laughing Gravy. At the end of the day we usually all go for a glass of wine. As we are only at LSBU once a week this is a very social occasion where we all catch up on each others new from the past week and fit our classes in around our gossip!

I trained in children’s nursing before moving to London to work at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Following a brief rotation amongst medical nursing I moved to work on the neonatal intensive care unit and undertook a degree in neonatal nursing at LSBU. I then took up a position as a senior staff nurse on a metabolic, endocrine and gastroenterology ward, where I went on to become a Nurse Practitioner (Trainee), and during this time I undertook the non-medical prescribing course at LSBU. After starting my MSc I took on a position of Clinical Site Practitioner at Great Ormond Street, a senior nursing position offering expert clinical advice and leadership to nurses throughout the hospital.

For my summer placement in year two, myself and a fellow student travelled to Uganda to work at a children’s HIV/AIDS hospital. This was a life affirming experience that I will have fond memories of forever.

Work/life/learning in London

Studying at masters level is always going to be challenging. However through undertaking the MSc at LSBU I have been able to advance in my career and have met some great friends. I have enjoyed doing modules shared by other professions such as education and social work.

I chose to study here because LSBU has strong links with Great Ormond Street Hospital where I work, and I have previously studied for a degree and a non-medical prescribing qualification there. I really like the Southbank and enjoy being able to walk from LSBU to the river.
