Entry Requirements

Research degrees

The entry requirements for registration for the degree of MPhil, or for MPhil with the possibility to transfer to PhD, is normally a first or second class Honours degree from a recognised university. Candidates will also need to have reached the level of English language skills required to undertake the programme of work and to prepare and defend a thesis.

Direct registration for a PhD may be possible, although this is normally restricted to holders of a relevant Masters degree. Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on their merits and we will take into account the nature and scope of the programme of work proposed. We also recognise professional experience, publications, reports and other evidence of accomplishment, ability and background knowledge appropriate to the proposed research.

An applicant must be accepted by a faculty as a research student. This can only be done once an appropriate supervisory team has been identified.
