Course description
The Professional Doctorate in Education is designed to provide experienced professionals from education and related fields with the opportunity to pursue a programme of Doctoral level studies that is relevant to their professional interests and needs. The aim of the EdD is to enable students to examine, engage critically with, plan and conduct research within a professional context, and to meet the requirements of rigour and originality expected of a Doctorate. It includes assessed taught courses and supervised original research.
Our EdD course is unique in offering a perspective on and orientation towards issues around diversity and equality as well as education for sustainable development. This reflects the commitment of the Education Department as a whole to these values. There will be a strong relationship between theory and practice and opportunities to work towards educational, social and environmental change in a range of environments. We encourage participants to come with a set of concerns that they want to address through the programme. It is hoped to introduce a Distance Learning mode for this course from January 2010.
Typical background of applicant
The course is designed for graduates of an MA/MSc in Education (including the LSBU MSc in Education for Sustainability) and for university staff with interests in teaching and learning, as well as other professionals in related fields.
Additional notes
The department also welcomes applications from suitably qualified students for PhD study. For details on specific areas of interest for postgraduate research contact Professor Stephen Lerman or Dr Bev Goring as indicated in Course Contacts.
