Course description
This is a specialised course likely to be of interest to current or intending finance or accounting professionals. It provides participants with a thorough and comprehensive grasp of the principles and applications of international finance and accounting, together with relevant technical and conceptual skills, while integrating theory with practice.
The course helps you to develop the skills of a reflective practitioner, with the confidence to bring one’s own professional circumstances and individual/creative interpretation to issues where established theories may not apply. You will build upon your prior knowledge and skills and extend these through a combination of taught units and independent research.
The course units are being developed and updated to provide you with a broader understanding of major issues and topics in relevant subjects. For the MSc you are required to complete eight taught units and the dissertation. Students who complete only eight taught units are eligible for a PgDip.
The taught units are assessed by different methods: coursework assignments, presentations, group work, case studies and unseen examination. The Research Methods and Methodologies unit prepares you for the exercise of writing the Masters Dissertation. It provides a critical understanding of the alternative methods and approaches available for conducting research that are required when writing the dissertation. It is currently assessed by a dissertation proposal. If accepted, this then forms the basis of the subsequent dissertation.
The dissertation provides the opportunity to apply the knowledge, techniques and skills acquired throughout the course, in order to design and carry out research into an area of finance and/or accounting that is of personal interest. An appropriate academic is appointed as Dissertation Facilitator to offer guidance and constructive advice on the preparation of your dissertation. Our team of teaching staff offer a rich profile of academic and professional qualifications backed by professional, teaching and/ or research experience.
The final award title (i.e. MSc International Accounting and Finance or MSc International Finance and Accounting) will depend on the optional units that you have chosen to study.
Career opportunities
Graduates will be highly employable in accounting and finance, in the UK and globally.
Typical background of applicant
Applicants are normally students who have completed, for example, the ACCA Fundamentals Level (2007 syllabus, or the equivalent of other UK and overseas professional accounting bodies), or who possess a relevant first degree and who wish to follow a more academic route than the completion of the later stages of a professional accounting qualification would allow
