Course description

MARU (Medical Architecture Research Unit) with the Department of Property, Surveying and Construction (PSC) at LSBU offer full Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited part and full-time multidisciplinary courses for UK and international, design and construction professionals, Trusts or companies who are involved in, or wish to be involved in, the planning, design and construction or management of development of buildings for health care delivery.

This course has been developed to provide you with the relevant skills to develop a high quality estate including: capital planning with business case procedures, master planning strategic estate and service planning, project briefing tools for new patient pathways, buildings-in-use evaluation techniques, project leadership and knowledge management, research methods and evidence-base briefing, design quality, management of construction, environmental performance specification, low carbon sustainable development approaches, customer focus and inclusive therapeutic design.

The course provides a strong supporting peer group and professional network. We utilise innovative and stimulating learning techniques in building evaluation from field visits in each unit. A highlight is the Comparative Health Estates Studies unit, which includes a five day European study visit.

Established for over 35 years, MARU with the PSC is an educational and research centre of excellence for validated, interprofessional training focused on the spectrum of healthcare provision from hospital to home. The integrated course provides flexible Masters modules accredited by RICS for Project Directors, Project Managers, Engineering, Design and Planning Leaders. The course is supported by the Department of Health Estates and Facilities for the NHS, HEFMA (Health Estates Facilities Management Association), Royal Institute of British Architects, Architects for Health, Association of Project Managers and Construction Knowledge Exchange.
