Course description

This Masters programme will offer career development opportunities for graduates from Sports and Exercise Science programmes. Students will be equipped to provide general sports science support in a variety of settings, from leisure and fitness centres to sports clubs and teams. Students will also be equipped to deliver and/or evaluate community physical activity programmes which are increasingly forming a key element of the government’s strategy to tackle obesity.

In the workplace, sports science is delivered in an interdisciplinary fashion, yet most existing MSc programmes adopt the traditional approach of teaching each of the Sports Science elements in isolation. Our programme is innovative in its approach of integrating each of the Sports Science elements to tackle issues such as Training for Performance.

The Academy of Sport and our partners have excellent networks within both sport and physical activity sectors, and we will exploit these to ensure that students acquire work experience during the programme to ensure their employability. With the sporting spotlight on London in the lead up to 2012, this is an exciting time to be studying sport at LSBU.

Career opportunities

This qualification will facilitate progression in numerous areas in both the private and public sectors, e.g. exercise and health in the community, leisure and fitness industry, support of elite athletes and teams.

Typical background of applicant Students will have a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree in Sport or Exercise Science related degree.

Professional contacts/industry links

Through our Academy of Sport we have excellent links across sport. We host the Central London County Sports Partnership (ProActive Central), London Sport Forum for People with Disability, London Active Communities, regional Sports Coach UK staff as well as officers from many different national governing bodies of sport. In addition we work closely with our local Primary Care Trusts on exercise and physical activity initiatives. Students will be exposed to different working environments in the course of their studies.
