Course description

The PgDip with the Qualification in Careers Guidance (QCG) has been designed specifically for those seeking to enter the Guidance profession. The key subject areas covered are: Occupational, Organisational, Counselling and Social Psychology and Education, with aspects of Sociology,Human Resources and Economics.

The PgDip provides the underpinning theoretical basis to Guidance as well as the development of the associated professional skills of guidance interviewing and group work. In addition to the Diploma most students also gain the QCG, which is recognised nationally as the initial professional qualification for Guidance. The QCG is awarded by the Institute of Career Guidance (ICG) and is achieved by undertaking additional: learning outcomes, a portfolio, assessed work and placements.

Full-time students will undertake two work-based placements to develop work-based learning, which will run throughout each semester. The full-time
course, is designed for those without guidance experience whereas the part-time course is for those working in a guidance or related area. The full
MSc is obtained by taking additionally a Research Methods unit and by undertaking a dissertation.

Career opportunities

Employment prospects are currently excellent, with demand outstripping supply. Successful students seek a variety of posts such as careers/personal advisers in Careers Service Companies/Connexions Partnerships, adult guidance workers, Further and Higher Education guidance services, voluntary agencies, youth and adult training, and personnel and employment agency work.

The QCG is nationally recognised as the initial professional qualification for Guidance, and is awarded by the ICG. Full-time students undertake in guidance and education.

Additional notes

If you wish to work in the Connexions Service, some limited funding for the course may be available from Connexions Partnerships. Each partnership may be able to access funding for an employee for secondment to the QCG or to sponsor a prospective student. It is suggested that you contact your local Connexions Partnerships about this.
