Course description

The GTP is a modular employmentbased programme. As such the majority of the training takes place within schools, with students training four days a week in their school. Students also attend LSBU for one day per week where they follow a subject-based programme in the core and foundation subjects, as well as units on professional studies and equality, inclusion and citizenship. The needs analysis process prior to the start of the course enables students with prior experience to negotiate their individual training needs.

School-based training is at the core of the programme and is designed to take account of the individual needs of the student, involving the setting up and carrying out of a flexible programme under the guidance of the school-based and university-based tutors.

The course aims to support entry into the teaching profession of creative, competent, flexible and reflective teachers. To this end the course is rigorous, both academically and professionally. Students are expected to be proactive in their attitude to the course.

All students entering the course have the possibility of gaining up to 60 credits at Masters level, which can be used by students to count towards the award of full Masters level qualifications (such as the LSBU MA in Education) gained via further study after graduation. The programme has proven to be very popular with candidates and is over-subscribed, so we recommend you apply as early as possible.

Overview of the school experience

Students undertake a needs analysis before induction, and as part of the induction the student and schoolbased tutor will begin the student’s individual training plan in collaboration with university tutors. The individual training plan outlines the school-based training and is reviewed termly. There are, generally, three stages of training. Stage One: the students, under the guidance of the class teacher, work with groups, observe a range of teaching and learning situations and begin to teach whole class lessons. Stage Two: the student team teaches with the class teacher. Stage Three: the student has full responsibility for the class. Progression through the stages will be dependent upon individual needs.

Typical background of applicant

All applicants need to have passes in Maths, English and Science at GCSE Grade C level or equivalent as well as a first degree at the time of entry to the course.
