Course description

This well established programme attracts professionals and continuing students alike, and offers advanced study within a highly continuing skilled practical programme. The programme is designed to equip students with core knowledge of research methods and social theory. It provides a unique opportunity to combine an understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and their application to social research.

Students will learn a range of skills, from writing and presenting research proposals, to handling advanced computer packages, to carrying out independent research study. The Department has a lively and broadbased research culture, investigating issues that are of relevance to the wider academic community and to public, private and voluntary sector policy makers and practitioners in a variety of fields. Lecturing staff are drawn from a range of disciplines including Sociology, Social Policy, Criminology and International Politics.

Our recent students have come from the public and private sectors including the health service, public administration, consultant researchers, NGOs, and voluntary service, including various charities. Progression from the PgDip to the MSc requires the completion of the taught units and a 15,000 word dissertation. Teaching and learning methods include lectures, interactive seminars and group work. E-learning support for relevant units is well developed.
