TOTAL LICENSING
FORAY INTO LICENSING FOR HARPER COLLINS
HarperCollins is making its foray into licensing, and entered the market in February 2009 with a range of Oliver Jef-
fers greetings cards from MGML. Not only are the publishers licensing the characters from books to which they own
the rights but they are also merchandising their own brand under the leadership of Melanie Beer, Head of Licensing
and Content Development. HarperCollins’ character range includes I Love Ollie; Lola
Love; and The Incredible Book Eating Boy.
The I Love Ollie brand is targeted at infant and nursery, social expressions and female
gifting. Lola Love’s design has been popular in publishing and HarperCollins is now finalis-
ing a t-shirt trial with a major High Street retailer.
Featuring the iconic illustrations of Oliver Jeffers, The Incredible Book Eating Boy is
about a boy who discovers an insatiable appetite for books, the more of which he eats,
the smarter he gets. Whilst the primary target is pre-school boys, the brand also trans-
lates to a range of social expression and female gifting due to the sophisticated design
content.
The Collins division of HarperCollins has a 185-year history and is now classified in the
Top 150 global Super Brands. Collins GEM is being developed into a high-design brand
that utilises fun words with dictionary definitions in various colours. Blueprint Collec-
tions Ltd is signed for stationery with product due to hit shelves in Q2 2010.
Collins Geo titles are sold in over 35 countries across six continents and the brand includes a huge range of maps
and atlases from street maps to comprehensive world atlases, which is now being developed for licensing.
ARTWORK FOR LICENSING
Rosenstiel’s, one of the world’s largest publishers of art prints and posters,
recently won its second Queen’s Award. Over the last 130 years, Rosenstiel’s
has collected and published over 30,000 decorative and commercial images,
ranging from traditional museum artwork like Monet and Constable and the
pre-Raphaelites that was popular in the 1980s through to the cutting-edge
design and contemporary photography that is popular today. Encompassing
everything from cave paintings to vibrant abstracts, the images are proven
commercial successes and are available presently for many different types
of application. 98% of the images from the archive are available for licensing
projects and include artwork by some of the greatest painters of the 20th
century.
