MA in Sociology

This innovative and flexible programme addresses both recent key concerns and sustained intellectual traditions within sociology. Interdisciplinary in spirit, the programme is taught by academics from several departments, all of whom are actively engaged in research which integrates sociology with exciting work in science studies, philosophy, anthropology, political economy, feminist theory, cultural analysis, history and geography. The degree has a central theory component, some methods training, and options which allow you to apply these analytical tools to particular issues and empirical topics.


Course structure The programme comprises three core, compulsory modules, three option modules, and a dissertation. The core modules provide a good grounding in the key conceptual and methodological issues in sociology.

In the dissertation you will have an opportunity to explore an area of interest in great depth under the supervision of a member of staff. Staff research interests include the latest development in the areas of mobilities, science and technology studies, social theory, media, gender and women’s studies, cultural sociology, economy and society, states and globalisation, race and ethnicities, nationality and multiculturalism.
