Dr Suzanne Ost Senior Lecturer, Law
Dr Ost’s main research interests are in medical law and ethics (particularly euthanasia and end of life issues), the legal and societal responses to child pornography and the sexual grooming of children, related aspects of criminal law and law and literature.
“I have deliberately chosen to focus on important, contemporary matters that attract societal and legal concern, such as child pornography and euthanasia. For my PhD, studied at Lancaster, I undertook a legal and ethical analysis of euthanasia. The University offers an excellent campus with all facilities that students need and lovely countryside on its doorstep. The city of Lancaster has some great pubs and restaurants and lovely Victorian architecture. The castle and cathedral are well worth a visit.”
“The Law School is well known and regarded for its multi-disciplinary and socio-legal approach to studying law. We have world-class researchers and highly effective teachers who examine how the law works in theory and in practice over a diverse range of topics. Staff have expertise in law in its European and International context. Just as when I studied for my PhD here, the Law School at Lancaster is friendly and welcoming and a very supportive place in which to undertake postgraduate study. It offers world- class facilities and a wide range of courses.”
The Lancaster Law School has a thriving postgraduate programme which is principally characterised by a multidis- ciplinary approach to the study of law as a social phenomenon. Law is studied in a manner which is theoretically informed and practically relevant. Staff within the Law School believe in the need to address law in the light of European and International developments and combine these concerns with a learning environment where postgraduates and academic staff can work in an informal atmosphere conducive to open debate. The Law School runs a regular Research Seminar Programme to which outside speakers are invited and work-in-progress papers are given by staff and postgraduate members. Postgraduate students also run their own Colloquium at which they can present current research ideas and findings to their peers.
We encourage the imaginative use and development of both legal and general skills.
The Law School has institutional links with major law schools in Europe and participates in the Erasmus European student exchange scheme. More informal links exist with law schools in the USA.
