Dr Paul Coulton Senior Lecturer
Dr Paul Coulton has over 15 years’ research and development experience in mobile systems and applications. Paul has published extensively, both in terms of academic publications and a book on S60 programming. His research in this area is internationally recognised and he has been selected as a Forum Nokia Champion as one of the world’s 50 most talented mobile developers, from a community of over 2 million.
Paul is the leader of Mobile Experiences Group as part of the Forum Nokia Innovation Network which includes universities from around the world. The main focus of his current research surrounds innovative mobile experience design with a particular emphasis on play and games. Many of the research projects encompass novel uses of the latest technologies such as RFID/NRC, VoIP, cameras, 3-D accelerometers and magnetometers in mobile phones, and his projects have won a number of awards for innovation.
“The mobile phone is now the most ubiquitous consumer technology in the world and increasingly our engagement with computer systems is through a mobile device. This provides a unique opportunity to create new computing experiences and services and students on our courses are equipped with the necessary skills to become innovators in this field.”
“Students here are involved in projects that work across academic and industrial boundaries, giving them skills that other institutions don’t offer. We focus on exploring ICT subjects in a friendly and challenging atmosphere.”
Our informatics research is internationally recognised for contributions to turbo and LDPC channel-capacity- approaching codes (Honary, Markarian, Lin), and advanced powerline communications. Our research on novel signal analysis and modelling, classification, prediction and multi- source fusion algorithms with often hierarchical, real-time and reconfigurability characteristics is widely applied to a spectrum of technology areas, including aerospace, telecommunications, and surveillance. These techniques are applied to speech quality enhancement/Voice over IP (Xydeas, Angelov); autonomous vehicle systems, Sense and Avoid, BAES/DTI (Angelov, Xydeas); multi-sensor image fusion, BAES (Xydeas); DIF-DTC/QinetiQ automatic object recognition/tracking and surveillance (Mihaylova), information management systems and medical decision aid systems (Xydeas, Angelov). As an example, a new generation of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes has been developed and proposed by the BBC as a standard for DVB-T2, and our rapidly-deployable video transmission technique for WiMAX users, has become a de-facto industry (BAPCO) standard.
Interdisciplinary and Applied Research Increasingly, our research is interdisciplinary from signal processing and wireless networking to innovative user interaction, software engineering and natural language processing; that means that our research spans all areas of the discipline from hardware to HCI, crosscutting computing and communications. We believe in conducting research in partnership with end-users and industry. We have ongoing work in areas including Health (“wireless e- Health”); Transport (e.g. aviation security); Energy management; Online security, crime fighting, counter- terrorism; Environmental informatics, Emergency response and Computing for Energy Conservation. This has led to the establishment of numerous Testbeds (e.g. Mobile IPv6) and long term deployed “Living Laboratories” with real communities (e.g. Wray wireless-mesh, e-Campus interactive public displays). These unique resources are great assets for conducting novel research and supporting teaching.
