Employability


Graduates are eligible to register as social workers with the General Social Care Council. Qualified social workers are much in demand, and Lancaster’s social work postgraduates are highly regarded in the profession. They work in social services departments with a wide variety of client groups and in a range of specialist agencies in the voluntary sector. Many now hold senior managerial posts, or are involved in training, consultancy and research.


Teaching is by lecture/discussion and seminars, with an emphasis on participative styles of education. In addition, the programme includes 200 days of practice learning with a placement in each year.


The course is provided by the Department which works in partnership with local stakeholders, including the main statutory and voluntary social work agencies in the North West. It is accredited by the General Social Care Council.


MRes in Criminology


Director of Studies: Dr Luca Follis. Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time. Entry Requirements: Normally at least an upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in criminology or criminal justice. Graduates from related disciplines in which there is a substantial element of criminology or criminal justice will also be considered. This programme provides you with a range of skills to undertake and critically evaluate criminological research along with transferable skills to enhance your employability. It introduces you to a set of theoretical resources relevant to the study of crime, criminal justice and crime policy that informs decisions about the design of research and provides critical analytical perspectives on applied research in the field.

You also complete a 17,500 word dissertation on a Criminological or Criminal justice topic of your choice with the support of a supervisor.
