MSc in Networking and Internet Systems

The demand for highly educated networking professionals with an awareness of cutting edge networking technologies and capable of influencing future developments will not relent. This industry facing MSc offers a unique balance between a course suitable for graduates from disciplines other than computer science and an advanced MSc equipping graduates with the skills to succeed as a networking specialist. Students of this course will experience highly innovative course content and methods of teaching, including a range of guest lecturers from internationally leading experts in the field, and the opportunity to undertake collaborative study with colleagues in other high profile European Universities such as Coimbra, Darmstadt, Helsinki, Mannheim and Oslo.


Course Structure


The course consists of a total of eight modules and a dissertation. Six core compulsory modules provide a thorough grounding in computer systems, networking and systems architectures and the fundamentals of programming. Two advanced ‘block mode’ options chosen from a portfolio of a further six let you fine tune the degree to indulge your interests. Your knowledge builds to cover all aspects of networks and network systems design to ensure a deep understanding of even advanced networking topics. The course is taught using a blend of theory and practice with hands-on exercises and real-world examples to promote understanding.


MSc/PgCert in Cyber Security


Director of Studies: Dr Daniel Prince Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 or 36 months part-time. Entry Requirements: At least an upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in Psychology, Computing or a closely related discipline. Applicants who do not meet these criteria but who have significant industrial experience will also be considered subject to individual circumstances. Assessment: Combination of coursework, exam and dissertation. IELTS: 6.5 min or TOEFL 580 (paper-based test), 238 (computer-based test), 93 (internet-based test). Funding: See page 213. The IT and Communications industry have recently suffered numerous, internationally high profile security breaches. This MSc equips you with the knowledge and skills necessary to work within the IT security profession, by combining advanced technical skills with disciplines such as Economics, Risk Management, Psychology and Social Science. Its strength and uniqueness lies in the multi- disciplinary nature in order to educate next generation security specialists. This course combines the expertise of the School of Computing and Communications with those of the Management School, Psychology and Sociology Departments, and ICT Focus (InfoLab’s professional training and development unit) to provide a truly rounded programme of study.


In addition to the academic content of the course, the technical modules within the degree offer the skills and knowledge required to enable you to obtain the industrially recognised professional qualifications of CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) and CHFI (Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator).


Course Structure


The course consists of eight taught modules and a research dissertation. Four modules from the course may be taken as a Postgraduate certificate (PgCert). Students successfully completing the PgCert have the option to progress to the full MSc.
