The MSc in Ecology and the Environment is one of our most popular postgraduate schemes. At the heart of its success is flexibility: modules can be selected from our full range to meet the needs or interests of any student of ecological or environmental sciences. This vocational degree offers you the chance to blend ecological and environmental science topics with those from areas such as social science, geography and statistics.


This MSc provides you with an understanding of the relationships between living organisms and their physical, chemical and biotic environment while also providing important specific skills related to environmental monitoring and management. The course also develops your transferable skills appropriate to a career in research, consultancy or industry. Graduates have gone on to pursue careers in the environmental and conservation sectors, as well as progressing to further study for a PhD.

The use of energy is central to the development and maintenance of economies throughout the world. Given this energy is taken from the environment and the biproducts are returned to the environment in various forms, exploitation of energy resources invariably incur environmental penalties. Nowhere is this more apparent than with the pressing issue of anthropogenic climate change. Charting a course to avoid ‘dangerous anthropogenic interference’ with the climate system represents one of the key challenges facing society, and energy clearly lies at the heart of the issue.


In recognition of the threats presented by climate change, the UK has recently committed to an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Such a monumental endeavour requires a generation to be trained to deliver the transition to a more sustainable energy portfolio. This training is clearly interdisciplinary, encompassing environment, engineering and policy.


The MSc Energy and Environment is designed for those wishing to develop careers in this challenging and yet exciting area. The taught component of the programme comprises 50 percent of the assessment. The remaining 50 percent of the assessment is an extended research project working on an energy sector application. These projects may be developed in conjunction with an industrial partner identified through the Enterprise and Business Partnership unit within LEC. These industry projects will not only give valuable industry relevant training, you will also be able to claim a substantial amount of work experience from this for your cv.
