Psychological research at Lancaster is focused around two research Centres, which reflect our internationally-recognised programmes of research excellence.
The Centre for Human Development and Learning draws together Lancaster’s critical mass of psychologists working on fundamental questions surrounding typical and atypical development, and learning from early infancy through to adulthood. Individual projects cover topics in: language learning and spatial awareness in infancy; memory development in children; the effect on development of diversity in multi- cultural environments, from social and cognitive perspectives; neuropsychological markers of cognitive development and decline in ageing; and language and literacy in typically and atypically developing populations. The Centre is at the forefront of international research in development and learning, combining behavioural, computational, and neuroscientific methods for investigating human behaviour across the lifespan.
The Centre for Cognition, Knowledge and Society conducts research in cognitive and social psychology, investigating psychological issues related to individuals and their relationship to society. Research projects cover topics in: forensic and investigative psychology; neuroscience models of emotion and social interaction; expert knowledge, skills, and the relationship between memory and reasoning; social cooperation, prejudice, conflict and inequality; social and national identity. The unique strength of this Centre is its combination of social, cognitive, and neuroscience psychologists addressing similar issues from complementary perspectives.
RESEARCH FACILITIES We offer excellent resources for conducting psychological research. The two Centres each offer cutting-edge facilities in their dedicated laboratories. The Centre for Human Development and Learning houses our state-of-the-art developmental psychology laboratories, including eye- movement recording equipment, EEG and multichannel evoked potential recording facilities, and two sound-proofed booths for auditory research. The Centre for Cognition, Knowledge and Society houses dedicated facilities for forensic and investigative psychological research, including interview suites for individual and group studies, and a suite of laboratories suitable for cognitive psychology studies.
