We offer a wide range of postgraduate degrees and programmes. All of our programmes offer some flexibility, so that you can broaden and deepen your subject knowledge and generic skills, and tailor your degree to match your interests.
Lancaster University has an excellent reputation for both research and teaching. In the most recent Higher Education Funding Council’s national research assessment exercise (2008), the University was ranked joint 15th out of 147 UK institutions for the quality of its research. External teaching quality assessments by the Quality Assurance Agency have also confirmed that Lancaster University has an excellent track record for the quality of its teaching and the student learning experience.
Our postgraduate students are an important part of our research culture and make up a third of our student population. You will automatically become a member of the University Graduate School when you register for your chosen postgraduate degree programme.

Our postgraduate students play an important role in our research activities whilst also deriving the benefits of working alongside experts at the cutting edge of their specialist fields.
We offer a broad range of variety of research degrees:
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) An MPhil normally takes two years of full-time study, with an emphasis on conducting original research and writing up a research project that is of similar quality but smaller in size and scope than a PhD thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Most doctoral students at Lancaster work on a traditional PhD by Research, which includes research training but has an emphasis on conducting original research and writing up a substantial research project in the form of a thesis. It is also possible to conduct original research and write it up as a series of peer-refereed academic papers for publication, rather than a thesis; this leads to the degree of PhD by Alternative Format.

Professional Doctorates At Lancaster, we offer two types of professional doctorates: Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy).
