RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Religious Studies at Lancaster is well known throughout the world and attracts students and visiting specialists from every continent. Our reputation as an international centre of excellence in research was recognised in 1989, 1992, 1996, 2001, and 2008 by the award of high ratings in the national research exercises.

We offer a wide range of courses and academic supervision. With our primary focus on religion and spirituality in the contemporary world, we are ideally positioned to contribute to topics of growing concern within the academic discipline of Religious Studies: the often unexpected changes and developments taking place in connection with religion, spirituality, philosophy, and social and cultural change.

Postgraduate students benefit from our dynamic culture and we have long-standing links with scholars, professional bodies and organisations both inside and outside Lancaster. We have organised numerous international conferences at Lancaster University and many of our academic staff serve on the committees of professional societies. Staff often collaborate with postgraduate students in conference organisation and co-editing manuscripts.

We are regularly contacted by the media to comment on religious issues and phenomena in the contemporary world. In addition, various members act as consultants for national and international organisations.

Regular research seminars draw on the expertise of staff members and invited speakers. Postgraduate workshops also provide research training in religious studies, in addition to the opportunity to present your own research projects.
