This course is designed to prepare you to tackle practical problems faced by organisations and, with advice and support from academic staff, to take responsibility for a consultancy based project to help resolve practical issues and problems faced by a client organisation. Our client organisations predominantly come from the creative industries and the cultural and heritage sectors. Client organisations we have worked with include BBC Radio, The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival, Lake District Summer Music Festival, The National Trust, Dukes Theatre, Wordsworth Trust, and The National Football Museum.


The MA consists of three taught modules (two for the PgCert), the completion of a consultancy project report and a dissertation (MA only). You will attend lectures on one day per week, allowing you to spend time with your client. Typically you will work or be involved with your client for 1-2 days per week over a period of 4-6 months.


MA in Contemporary Arts Research


Director of Studies: Dr Ed Venn. Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time. Entry Requirements: An upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in a relevant discipline. This course is specifically designed for graduates in any of the listed pathway disciplines who want to prepare for doctoral study either by integrating creative practice with theoretical or historical work, or by more traditional methods. The course is modelled on the generic structure of a doctoral programme. As part of a continuous overarching research project, you will produce a research review, a research methods presentation and then a thesis and/or

major practical project. Throughout the course you will meet regularly with your supervisor, and the first two terms consist of weekly group seminars on a range of generic and subject-specific research methods (including practice-based methods).


MA in Design Management and Policy


Director of Studies: Martyn Evans. Duration: 12 months full-time. Entry Requirements: An upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in Design or a cognate discipline. Assessment: Combination of coursework, presentation and major research project. IELTS: 6.5 Funding: LICA will offer one full AHRC MA Studentship covering fees and a maintenance stipend in 2011-2012. MA Design: Management and Policy focuses on how human-centred design thinking can address tomorrow’s challenges and prepares students for leadership roles via projects that require complex problem solving skills and explores new directions for products, services and systems. The importance of design and design thinking in delivering organisational goals, of managing design, innovation and creativity effectively, and of initiating and developing policy on the role and value of design, is widely recognised. Our course considers the role of design in the many arenas in which it is employed and supports design research and creative insights into, for, and through design. An investigation of the role of design in commercial contexts is supported by a programme of case studies, live projects, visiting professionals, and placement opportunities. It concludes with a major research project.


The course is suitable for design and associated graduates who want to develop additional skills and modes of thinking required in design management, design research, design leadership, and design policy. It prepares students for higher research degrees, and careers as design consultants, managers and policy makers in both private and public organisations across sectors such as manufacturing, retail, construction, government, health and education.
