New Campus in India Lancaster University has launched a new campus in India which admitted its first cohort of 300 students in August 2009.


The GD Goenka World Institute has been established to cater to the rising demand for quality higher education in India to provide avenues for higher education to its students in an environment that is conducive to learning and teaching, and to produce future business leaders.


Lancaster Wins Queen’s Anniversary Award for Research The Queen presented an award at Buckingham Palace for Lancaster University’s world-class research into watersaving techniques for agriculture. Her Majesty presented the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education to Distinguished Professor Bill Davies, who led a team of plant biologists at the Lancaster Environment Centre in the development of the research.


It is the third time the University has received one of these prestigious awards.


The world-class research will help farmers in some of the driest regions of the world and help meet the challenge of feeding seven billion people against a background of climate change.


Lancaster Team Selected for Rice University Business Plan Competition A team of Lancaster postgraduate students won entry to the Rice University Business Plan Competition, the most prestigious of its kind in the world. The Lancaster team is one of 42 selected from over 400 entries from around the world, which compete for more than $800,000 in cash and prizes.


The competition is judged by venture capital managers, angel or informal investors and other members of the entrepreneurial community. More important than the winners’ cash prize of $325,000 is the opportunity to network and receive mentoring from successful entrepreneurs.


The plan put forward by the Lancaster team describes a company, ‘Gaea Naturals Limited’, that uses an innovative approach to industrial waste water recycling with minimal consumption of energy to help a variety of industries meet sustainability and regulatory obligations, save costs and reduce carbon footprint. The team combines the entrepreneurial vision and abilities of three members of the Lancaster MBA class, Manoj Krishnapillai, Sonu Bubna

Creativity in Science and Technology Computer Scientists at Lancaster University are leading a £3.24 million project investigating the role of creativity in science and technology.


Computer scientists, psychologists, artists and designers from across Europe have embarked on the four-year project which aims to advance the current understanding of the creative design process applied in scientific and technological problem solving.


Poetry, art and music will all come under the microscope of the research network which brings together seven institutions from the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy and Portugal and benefits from the participation of Philips Research as an industrial partner.


What’s the STOR-I at Lancaster University?


Lancaster University has received substantial funding from the EPSRC for a unique Doctoral Training Centre at the interface of Statistics, Operational Research and Industry. Continual support and collaboration from leading UK industries such as Shell and Unilever will ensure that graduates of the STOR-i Doctoral Training Centre will be part of a new generation of researcher capable of creating an impact in academia or industry. The centre will provide fully-funded studentships to at least 40 PhD students entering the centre between October 2010 and 2013.


Centre for Organisational Health and Wellbeing Launched Based in the School of Health and Medicine, the Centre for Organisational Health and Wellbeing is supported by companies such as Nestlé, Unilever, Shell and the Cabinet Office and undertakes research on how to integrate many aspects of mental and physical health into work and the work environment.


Current projects are being conducted in the area of employee engagement, absenteeism at work, leadership and health, and the effectiveness of health promotion initiatives.
