The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University is one of the largest Linguistics centre in Britain and incorporates: the University Centre for Computer Corpus Research on Language; the Centre for Research in Language Education; the Literacy Research Centre, Centre for the Study of Language in Social Life and a number of smaller research groups.

85% of our research is internationally recognised and 20% is world leading – RAE 2008

Postgraduate students are welcome to take part in the activities of these research centres and also our smaller and very active staff-student research groups.

Dr Dianne Wall Senior Lecturer

Dr Wall’s main interests are language testing and English for Academic Purposes. She has served as adviser to examination development projects in many countries.

“Researching to find better ways to construct examinations is particularly important in modern society. Exams have significant, often life-changing, consequences, so it’s crucial to make sure that they are sound in theory and practice.”

“Our Department offers excellent opportunities for postgraduate study and research, including four campus-based MA programmes, three on-line MAs and PhD work by research or by a combination of research and coursework. We offer a thriving intellectual environment, with research falling into five main areas: Linguistic theory and language description; Language and literacy in their social contexts; Discourse studies; Second language learning, teaching and assessment; and Methods of language research.”

“We are a friendly and accessible department, with an excellent reputation in both the theoretical and applied sides of our discipline.”

The Department also runs a 4-week and an 8-week course in EAP/Study Skills in the summer for intending postgraduates whose first language is not English. Please see page 27 for further details.

TAUGHT COURSES The highly-regarded MA in Language Studies degree is unique in providing you with the opportunity to construct your own programme of studies from a wide range of courses. We have also introduced an MA in English Language (by distance learning) catering for a wide range of language professionals, especially A-level teachers of English Language. We also offer a combined MA in English Language and Literary Studies (in collaboration with the English Department). Our new MA in Discourse Studies programme is specifically designed to give students the competence to undertake empirical work in discourse studies.

Our MA in TESOL (Lancaster) is designed for teachers with three or more years of experience – and is also available by distance learning. It is complemented by our MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, designed to cater to those with less than two years’ EFL teaching experience (including those with none).

In the MA in Language Studies and MA in Discourse Studies, in appropriate cases, it is possible to opt for a ‘Research MA’ with more weight on the dissertation than on courses.
