This postgraduate programme is designed to enable you to gain the knowledge and analytic skills to enhance practice in child welfare. Essential research training will enable you to make better use of agency data, to undertake small-scale agency based action research and to make informed use of national and international research for best practice. The scheme will greatly enhance your employability given the current emphasis within children’s services on postgraduate education. The course can be taken on a full-time or flexible part-time basis.
For students wishing to pursue academic careers in research and teaching, or seeking a policy development role, the programme provides an essential stepping stone for further research at doctoral level. Students who hold the MRes will be eligible to apply for ESRC funded PhD studentships, as well as other institutional/agency bursaries.
The programme comprises 6 taught modules plus a 15,000 word dissertation.

This is a part-time postgraduate certificate that will enable you to enhance both your theoretical knowledge and skills base in child welfare practice. The course will introduce you to the very latest research for practice, and is particularly suited for those seeking to progress to senior/advanced practitioner roles.
• Access and discuss up to date research for child care and safeguarding practice;
• Enhance theoretical knowledge for practice; • Develop new practice skills including those involving emerging technologies;
• Share ‘best practice’; • Participate in knowledge exchange with service users.
Core modules include: Advances in Child Protection: Learning from Serious Case Reviews, common pitfalls in reasoning, investigative work and analysis, models of risk assessment, updates in safeguarding policy.
Solution- Focused Approaches in Child Welfare: Principles and practice skills, evidence base, family group conferencing, safety planning, new research.
Social Pedagogy and Child Welfare: Theoretical approaches in social pedagogy, research evidence, reflexivity and relationships in the residential space, developing pedagogic tools with children and young people.
Upon successful completion of the certificate, you can progress to the Masters in Child Welfare.
