The Mathematics and Statistics Department is an internationally recognised research and teaching facility. The Department’s performance is reflected in recent league tables, with Lancaster, Oxford and Cambridge the top three in an aggregate table combining 2008 scores from The Guardian, The Independent and The Times.
Professor Paul Fearnhead Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Professor Paul Fearnhead’s main interests lie in Bayesian and Computational Statistics and their application, primarily within genetics. He was awarded two major national prizes in 2007.
“The distinctive feature of statistics research at Lancaster is that methodological innovations are motivated by, and fed back into, substantive applications in the natural, biomedical and social sciences. We have particular strengths in computational statistical methods; longitudinal data analysis; spatial statistics; and extreme value theory. Much of our work is inter-disciplinary, and we have strong links with other research groups both within and outside the university. Large application areas include systems biology; human and veterinary epidemiology; and criminology.”
“We are one of the largest and strongest statistics groups in the UK. We have an outstanding reputation for postgraduate training in statistics, and are the UK’s only Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Postgraduate Statistics.”
In 2008 the Postgraduate Statistics Centre at Lancaster University was officially opened by the former president of the Royal Statistical Society, Professor Sir David Cox. Our award-winning building comprises dedicated teaching, learning, computing and research facilities for our postgraduate students. The Department is also a founder member of the national PhD training centres in Statistics, Mathematics and Operational Research.
We have many established research links with business, industry and government which have been fostered and developed by our four sections: Pure Mathematics, Statistics, Medical Statistics and Social Statistics. Several companies visit us each year to promote the recruitment of our graduates and we have an excellent reputation for graduate employment success.
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise Lancaster submitted the fifth-largest research group to the panel for statistics and operations research. Sixty percent of our research output was judged to be “world leading” or “internationally excellent”. In the pure mathematics assessment, 50% of our research activity was judged to be “world leading” or “internationally excellent”. The pure mathematics research covers analysis and algebra with applications to mathematical physics and to computer aided design.
In 2010, the Department was awarded substantial funding to develop a unique Doctoral Training Centre combining Statistics, Operational Research and Industrial Applications. We are producing a new generation of researcher who is capable of creating an impact in these complementary areas. The centre will fully fund at least 40 students between October 2010 and 2013.
The research community within our Department has a strongly international flavour, including staff and research students from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America and Australasia.
