The Department of Politics, Philosophy, and Religion comprises an internationally renowned body of academic staff and professional researchers with specialist knowledge in, or expertise spanning, each of its three distinctive subject areas. Lancaster University is one of only two universities in the world to have such a department and this reflects our commitment to the pursuit of excellence within distinct disciplinary fields, whilst developing research activities which address contemporary global issues connecting politics, philosophy, and religion.

Professor Christopher May Professor of Political Economy

Professor May researches intellectual property rights and the information society. He is currently working with the National Consumer Council to expand their coverage of intellectual property issues, and has recently completed the first independent book length study of the World Intellectual Property Organisation.

“No one can ignore intellectual property nowadays and my research examines such issues as why AIDS medicines cost so much, why music downloading is often illegal and how ownership of information disrupts many of the benefits of the Internet for people in Africa.”

“We offer a broad range of postgraduate programmes that reflect the diversity of our staff, the breadth of our interests and our commitment to explore the exciting world of politics and international relations.”
