MSc in Mobile and Broadband Communications

Third generation wireless and beyond (B3G) systems have generated ever-increasing interest over the last few years. This has been fuelled by a demand for higher frequency utilisation and a large number of users requiring simultaneous multi-dimensional high data rate access for applications of wireless Internet, mobile TV, location based services and presence. B3G mobile will use new network architectures to deliver these innovative services in a more generic structure to customers. Large bandwidth, guaranteed quality of service, system convergence, and ease of deployment are all challenges that must be met by B3G mobile. Students attending this course will be provided with the necessary knowledge to successfully meet the challenges of WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband communication systems, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), MIMO systems, space-time coding, software defined radio and re-configurable analogue and digital RF systems.

This course has been designed for graduates in engineering, science or technology who are seeking advanced knowledge and specialised design skills in DSP techniques. Although the course is mainly concerned with the application of DSP in telecommunications, it also provides you with training on the general use of DSP techniques in many different application areas including: robotics and autonomous systems; hi-fi and domestic electronic equipment; medical systems; geophysical and underwater; sensor networks; aerospace; and automotive and environmental systems. It is this generic nature of DSP, coupled with its role as a key enabling technology in the design of next generation systems that makes graduates from this course sought after by employers in high technology industries.


Course Structure


Students on both the MSc in Mobile Broadband Communications and DSP and Intelligent Systems are required to complete six taught modules selected from a set of options, which vary dependant upon the specific scheme of study undertaken, plus a project dissertation. Projects feature one-to-one supervision with a member of academic staff and can be research-led or with one of our industrial partners to allow you to gain valuable experience of commercially driven projects and an introduction to a potential employer.
