TAUGHT COURSES
The MSc degrees offered by the School are structured into three distinct groups, namely Computing, Communications Engineeringand SpecialistProgrammes.
Degrees within the Computing and Communications Engineering groups provide opportunities for broad yet rigorous advanced academic study in their respective academic disciplines. These degrees assume previous academic study and/or experience within their discipline and draw upon the school’s research strength to deliver broad, innovative and state of the art programmes that are highly relevant to a range of possible career paths.
Our Specialist Programmes provide equally rigorous courses, but are tailored toward more specific career paths, and may suit those students wishing to specialise their knowledge and skills around topic areas such as Cyber Security, Social Networking Technologies and Networking and Internet Systems. These offerings do not necessarily require previous study in that topic area.
The following pages describe each of the degree offerings available within these groups in more detail. Whichever degree you choose to study, you will be part of the same family of staff and students that make the School of Computing and Communications. COMPUTING TAUGHT COURSES
Masters Programme in Advanced Computer Science
Director of Studies: Dr Keith Cheverst. Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time. Entry Requirements: At least a second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in Computer Science or a closely related discipline. Applicants who do not meet these criteria but who have significant industrial experience will also be considered subject to individual circumstances. The Advanced Computer Science (ACS) programme offers five distinct pathways of study designed for those who have already studied Computer Science or a related subject and now wish move their skills up to the next level. Students of this programme will have gained knowledge, skills and in- depth technical understanding of advanced concepts in Computer Science. Our graduates excel in demanding professional software and systems design environments. Equally, this programme provides an ideal preparation for a professional or academic research career.
The five pathways through the ACS programme are organised into respective MSc courses to reflect the specialism you will gain during your studies:
MSc in Advanced Computer Science This course offers a range of advanced level Computer Science courses building on our research strengths to ensure you cover the latest innovations in Distributed Systems, Interaction Design (HCI), and Software Engineering. You will have access to a wide range of electives exploring cutting edge topics in Operating Systems, Networking, Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing. The course provides an excellent foundation for either doctoral studies or a highflying career in industry. The freedom to combine any six of our modules and block mode delivery makes this scheme ideally suited for part-time study.
