RESEARCH DEGREES Applications for Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and postgraduate study (part-time and industry based) by research, leading to either an MPhil or PhD, are welcomed.

MPhil/PhD MSc/PgDip in Safety Engineering

Director of Studies: Professor Roger Kemp. Duration: 24 months part-time (MSc, industry based). Entry Requirements: At least a second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in an engineering discipline, mathematics or physics. An HND together with appropriate practical experience may also be acceptable. Assessment: Combination of coursework and/or examination and a dissertation. IELTS: 6.5 Funding: See page 213. As engineering systems become more complex it is increasingly difficult to show that they will operate safely for their whole life. This course addresses this problem by exposing students to the knowledge and techniques of safety engineering that are appropriate over a wide spectrum of industries. The course is suitable for those from a conventional engineering background who find themselves operating in a safety related industry, and is appropriate for both young engineers in the early part of their careers and senior management.

A feature of the course is that, in addition to the generic safety modules: including, Strategic health, safety and environmental management, The design of safety critical systems, Operational safety, Human factors and safety, students also take two industry specific modules which include Nuclear Engineering and Aerospace. Many high- level industrial experts contribute to the course as visiting speakers and an important aspect of the work is a critical consideration of real accident case studies.

Entry Requirements: Applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in an engineering or associated discipline. Relevant industrial or related experience will also be considered. Assessment: Original research and thesis. IELTS: 6.5 Funding: Industrial Scholarships and EPSRC Doctoral Training Awards may be available – see also page 213. Further Information: www.engineering.lancs.ac.uk

MSc in Engineering (by Research)

Director of Studies: Individual supervisor. Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time. Entry Requirements: At least an upper second class honours degree, or equivalent recognised degree. Students would normally be required to demonstrate a high level of attainment in their dissertation or equivalent from their first degree. Assessment: Interim reports with a final dissertation based on the research. IELTS: 6.5 Funding: See page 213. Further Information: www.engineering.lancs.ac.uk

The department has extremely good industry links and through this has opportunities for short-term industrial research projects. This is particularly attractive to mature students with industrial experience who wish to augment their qualifications within a specific area, but prefer the greater flexibility an MSc by Research would offer over a structured taught MSc.

The main feature of this programme is the flexibility for learning. After an induction period, with a project supervisor, a learning contract will be completed between yourself, the university and where applicable an outside organisation. A research training needs analysis will be made and you will be
