Mike Cassidy MSc Environmental Hazards
“I came to Lancaster firstly for the excellent reputation of the Department and the masters course here.
I
also had some friends who studied here before who recommended the Department and University not to mention the close proximity to stunning scenery.”
“There was a large range of research topics to choose from and I found the taught modules very interesting and relevant. I gained useful training during the taught modules such as learning GIS and remote sensing, whilst also developing my writing and presentation skills.”
“I am now doing a PhD in the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, researching the evolution of volcanism on Montserrat, West Indies. The scientific writing and communication skills I built up doing my dissertation, the connections I made throughout the course and the supervised research I carried out at Lancaster really helped me to progress to further postgraduate research.”

RESEARCH DEGREES Research projects leading to the award of a PhD or Masters by Research are available in all areas of the biological, geographical and environmental sciences within the Lancaster Environment Centre. Research programmes allow you to focus on a specific area of interest whilst also undergoing appropriate research training.
Research within LEC is organised into five inter-disciplinary research themes and within each theme there are many specialist research groups. These are headed by permanent
Each of these MSc by Research degrees are designed to fit around your research interests and are assessed on a piece of original research carried out with the Department, and subsequent submission of a dissertation. MSc by Research courses are suitable for those wanting to undertake only research, rather than taught courses and they are particularly suited to those who may wish to undertake research associated with their employment but would like to submit the work as a thesis for a higher degree. A range of research opportunities are available.
Typically, you will be expected to undertake an induction course, followed by an eight-month research project, and then spend three further months writing up the dissertation.
