Language, cultural policy and identity Several members of the department are breaking new ground in the field of language, regional policy, identity and multiculturalism. Our research on the interrelationship between written text and national identity has been lent a significant international dimension through the work of The Interculture Project. A HEFCE-funded initiative, this project has developed a unique database of students’ narratives of their intercultural experiences during periods of study and work abroad. Publications have resulted on identity and narration, corpus-based research methodology and the formation of stereotypes.

This encompasses research on the concept ‘society’, amongst other questions the one of ‘global’ and ‘European society’, but also classical and current sociological theory in general, for instance in the field of conflict, inclusion/integration, (beyond) identity, communication, religion, everyday life culture, or transnationalisation and related concepts.

“Postgraduate work is at the core of each research oriented department and faculty. I support a lively exchange amongst our postgraduates as well as between them and other researchers inside and outside the department. Also, for the last three years I have offered our DELC postgraduate students (and a selection of others from our and other universities) Postgraduate Courses on Global and European Studies. This is based on international cooperation and provides MA and PhD students with an extraordinary opportunity to learn from and discuss with prominent scholars about the conditions, processes, structures and consequences of globalization and European integration and to present and discuss their own research projects and related questions. If you are thinking about writing a PhD thesis or doing a master’s programme with us, please don’t hesitate and arrange a personal meeting with me.”

The departmental staff provides supervision on a broad choice of subjects – individually (please see the individual staff pages for more detailed information), but also in relation to research groups which consist of a wide range of participating scholars, departments and faculties across Lancaster University. These groups work interdisciplinarily on ‘Europe and Globalisation’, ‘Latin America’ and ‘Africa’, and welcome postgraduate students who are interested in participation.
