World-Class Research and Teaching
Lancaster University is in the top band of UK Universities with a high proportion of our research rated ‘world leading’ in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008). We are ranked joint 15th
out of 147 institutions for the amount of our research which is judged to be of world leading importance.
The National Research Assessment Exercise measures the quality of research conducted in universities and other higher education institutions in the UK against international standards of excellence.
• Lancaster is in the top 13% of UK universities in terms of world leading and internationally excellent research.
• Overall, 92% of our research is recognised as being of an international standard and all units of assessment included world leading research.
• 13 of our departments are in the top 20 of UK institutions for their individual disciplines. This equates to 73% of our staff.
1st in UK for Physics
Top 3 in the UK for Bio-Medicine which is part of our newly established School of Health and Medicine (in the Allied Health Professions and Studies UoA).
Top 3 in the UK for Art and Design which at Lancaster includes Music, Theatre, Film and New Media, in the UK’s top 3. 80% of its research classed as world (4*) or internationally (3*) leading.
Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) ranked joint 5th in the country.
Sociology is ranked 5th in the country.
Computing has 100% of research considered to be of international quality.
Our high quality research feeds into our high quality teaching and nine of our staff have won individual awards in the prestigious National Teaching Fellow Scheme organised by the Higher Education Academy. The latest National Student Satisfaction Survey (which ranks us 13th
in the UK) echoes
Lancaster’s teaching excellence which contributes to students’ overall experience. Our students are happy here.
League Table Success
• Lancaster has broken into the elite group of top ten universities in the UK in The Times Good University Guide 2011.
• Other national league table results include the Independent’s Complete University Guide 2011, which ranks Lancaster 8th overall in the UK out of 113 institutions, a result which takes into account excellent graduate prospects and student satisfaction scores. The Guardian ranks Lancaster 6th
University Guide 2011, a rise of 10 places.
• The 2010 Financial Times Global MBA ranking, places the Lancaster MBA 24th in the world, 10th in Europe and 4th in the UK. This position confirms the consistent and reliable quality that has placed Lancaster in the top 30 in the world over the last four years. The 2010 FT ranking keeps Lancaster in a cluster of world-class business schools.
• Our Management School is typically ranked in the UK’s top four and among the world’s highly ranked management and business schools. It is the only UK business school to be so highly ranked across all major activities (MBA and Masters, Undergraduate, PhD, Research and Executive Education) and as such, is the leading full-spectrum business/management school in the UK. The School has also been awarded the highest possible standard of achievement for business schools after being granted AACSB International status for its programmes. The School is one of only a small number of business schools to hold triple accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS and the Association of MBAs.
