The aim of this programme is to enhance your understanding of leadership and management theories and to increase your ability to apply this knowledge to real work issues.
The programme is structured around five taught modules: three in year one, two in year two including the written submission of a work-based project. The course uses online materials plus 19 day-long sessions at Lancaster University (or your workplace for cohorts from the same organisation).
Completion of part 1 can lead to a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, or can lead onto part 2.
Work Based Projects Part 2 for all variants consists of two modules. You negotiate the topic of a work based project with your employer via a ‘learning contract’. Once you have completed a module on how to design work based projects, you are ready to undertake the project itself. The driving ethos is that your project is useful and meaningful because it has been developed through a partnership between you, your employer and the University. This ensures that your own professional development needs, the organisational needs of your employer and the requirements of the University are all met. This project is written up in the form of a dissertation.
PgCert in Medical Leadership for Health Service Modernisation
Director of Studies: Lesley Mayne. Duration: 12 months part-time. Entry Requirements: You must be medically-qualified, employed within the Health Sector and resident within the UK for at least 3 years. If you wish to begin the programme during your Foundation or Speciality Training, you must provide evidence of your situation by means of a CV and letter of recommendation from your NHS Trust’s postgraduate tutor, advisor or equivalent. Consultants or general practitioners should provide a CV and letter of support from their medical director or senior partner, as appropriate. Assessment: There are no exams. Coursework assignments are varied and are designed to be useful for your work as well as for academic assessment purposes. This programme provides doctors with a range of professional and transferable skills to enable them to play a key role in health service modernisation and to support their career development as future leaders of health services.
It will be particularly relevant to doctors in their Foundation year 2, as well as to doctors who are at a more advanced career stage and who wish now to develop their skills in leading and advancing health service planning and delivery.
To enable participants to accommodate the programme alongside their other professional responsibilities, delivery will be on the basis of one module per year over three years. Individual modules are separately recognised. Once enrolled, participants will be able to complete even if they relocate away from the area.
Each module requires three separate days’ attendance, as well as associated reading and assignment work.
PgCert in Applied Bioscience and Business Management
Director of Studies: Lesley Mayne. Duration: 12 months part-time. Entry Requirements: At least an honours degree (or successful experience of level 6 study in the last 5 years), or its equivalent, plus at least 3 years relevant work experience or current employment in a senior position with appropriate support and guidance from an experienced manager within the organisation. If you do not meet these entry requirements you may still be able to apply on the basis of line manager recommendation, interview and 1,000 word critique of a set journal article. This programme offers professional development for those in the Biomedical sector. Modules are offered in three groups: Bioscience, Business and Management skills and generic skills. Students will undertake study in modules from each of the groups. The modules have been developed within a framework which allows students to negotiate their areas of learning and to carry out work- based projects which benefit their business. Learners will be able to claim accreditation of prior learning, including prior experiential learning and may subsequently progress to an MSc.
Newly qualified graduates in their first year of employment, especially those from a scientific background may benefit specifically from the more generic modules such as management and leadership. In addition, some of the modules may act as ‘conversion courses’ e.g. a Chemistry graduate may undertake a module in Molecular Biology. As this is a work-based scheme, it is equally suitable for
