CASE STUDY
This edition’s case study comes from
Connecting Somerset, an organisation set
up to encourage businesses to adopt ICT.
With their support, a local food company
set out to improve sales and efficiency by
using databases and the Internet. Here is
their story.
Roger White was a pig farmer for forty years
before he set up Somerset Local Food Direct.
“Our objective is to put local people directly in
touch with local food producers. We decided
to invest in technology right from the very
beginning,” says Roger.

The company uses a database-driven website.
“Our customers log on and place orders, our
producers and growers check their orders and our
van drivers log on to plan their delivery routes - all at a
time that suits them and ties in with their hectic schedules.”
Roger has recently had broadband installed at his home and finds
it has transformed the way he works. “Broadband has revolutionised the
way I work. We had broadband in the office in Glastonbury and I used to go
into the office every day, but since having broadband at home, I no longer have to
make the daily trek from my home in Crewkerne. Instead I spend 2 days of the week at
home where I can log on any time and know what is happening in the office.”
