Why Study Design and Technology Education?
If you enjoy woodworking and technical graphics, if you like designing and making
furniture and if you are keen on teaching these skills to students at school then you
should consider studying Design & Technology Education in Letterfrack.
Graduates are qualified to teach Materials Technology (Wood) and Technical Graphics
to Junior Certificate and Architectural Technology and Design and Communication
Studies to Leaving Certificate honours standard in the Irish second level school system.
You are trained in designing, drawing and making furniture, using both hand tools
and machines as well as exploring new technologies and developing solutions in
a creative and imaginative way. You will develop teaching skills through peer
reviewed and micro teaching events as well as through various teaching practices
in schools.

Materials, Manufacturing Technology, Technical Graphics, Mathematics, Applied
Science, Furniture History and Design Process, Projects, Applied Graphics and
Computer Applications, Design and Visual Studies, Teaching Practice Preparation,
Teaching Management Techniques, Professional Studies, Architectural Technology
Career Opportunities
Graduates will be qualified to teach the above listed subjects in all second level
schools (vocational, secondary, community and comprehensive schools). Due to
the high level of skill acquisition in the earlier part of the course, graduates will
be suitably qualified to operate at technician level within the furniture and wood
related industry.
Additional Entry Requirements
Standard Level 8 entry requirements including Design and Communication
Graphics or Architectural Technology.
Other Essential Information
Teaching practice blocks (6 weeks each) take place in Years 3 and 4. Years 1 and
2 of this course are run at GMIT, Letterfrack and Years 3 and 4 are run at GMIT,
Galway.
Post-graduate Studies
GMIT honours (level 8) qualifications are recognised world-wide
for post-graduate entry.
