This course is one of only three honours degree courses in the Republic of Ireland
which are recognised by the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science as enabling
graduates to practice as medical scientists in hospitals. There is currently a skills
shortage in this area. Graduates can also develop careers in medical research and
in the pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors.

There is a 30 week structured in-service placement as a student medical scientist
