STATISTICS
European sales of semiconductors
show small growth in July
Sales on the European semiconductor
market grew by 0.7 % in July compared
to the previous month, the World
Semiconductor Trade Statistics reports
today.
Optoelectronics, total logic and MOS
special purpose logic drove the market
increase in Europe in July. As far as
optoelectronics are concerned, notably
image sensors and laser pickups
confirmed the high growth (20% up for
these latter) registered in June, while
laser transmitters recorded the first
positive growth (9%) after three months
of decline. A similar market development
can be noted on the logic side, with
standard logic back to a positive growth
after four months of downward trend,
driven by MOS gate arrays, MOS
standard cells & Field Programmable
Logic Devices (FPLD) and MOS display
driversí good dynamics.
Looking at application specific chips,
logic and analog devices designed for
communication show a moving sequential
quarterly growth, following a worldwide
trend of the market for analog- and logic
ICs designed for Wireless
Communications. More in detail,
European semiconductor sales in July
2008 amounted to US$ 3.392 billion
according to WSTS, up 0.7% versus the
previous month.
This corresponds to an increase of
3.3% compared to the same month last
year. On a YTD basis semiconductor sales
increased by 1.6% versus the same period
in the year 2007. The exchange rate of
the Euro compared to the US dollar holds
its impact on the growth data at very high
level.
Measured in Euro, semiconductor
sales in July 2008 were 2.171 billion
Euro, up 0.7% on previous month
and down 10.5% versus the same month
a year ago. On a YTD basis
semiconductor sales showed a decline
of 11.7% versus the same period in the
year 2007.
On a worldwide basis, semiconductor
sales in July 2008 were US$ 22.178
billion, up 2.8% versus the previous
month. This results in an increase of
7.6% versus the same month in 2007
and on a YTD basis it results in an
increase of 5.0%.
