NJ: Aside from blogging how else are social networks making an im- pact today? MB: Virtual worlds. Virtual worlds really are also social networks. Second Life now has in the region of 7.2 million users registered globally, with 1.6 million logging in over the previous 60 days. That’s not too shabby for an entirely new kind of internet platform and it mirrors what happened with the first two dimensional web browsers which is really where we are still at the moment. But the truth is that virtual worlds, in my view – if you want my honest opinion, is that they are about to split into consumer businesses owned by media companies and ventures and enterprise. Enterprise applications really is the area where business will get most value, in my view,
from virtual worlds.
NJ: What developments can you see in the immediate future? MB: There’s a new kid on the block, it’s called microblogging. This is really going mainstream, in my view. The last entrant into the cool technology of 2007 was
Twitter.com and its more fully featured cousin, Jaiku, which came out of Helsinki. This represents a new style of blogging,
it’s microblogging,
it’s just 140 characters: “What am I doing?”,
“Who am I seeing?”, “Where am I?”, “Am I having lunch?” – that kind of thing. I know it sounds frivolous but you sort of have to see it to believe it. Microblogging fills in the gap created by the onslaught of things like email which constantly require us to reply. You’ve seen that haven’t you? Email inbox you have to reply to every single one. Instead, in 140 characters or less, you tell your collective contacts what you’re doing or what you’re up to. My view is that if the social network is an organism, then Twitter is its pulse. News on Twitter and Jaiku spreads much, much faster than it does on blogs because it uses the near ubiquitous technology of sms. So why should we take notice of Jaiku? Well,
I’ll tell
you why we should take notice of Jaiku – because Google bought them. And it is going to be using Jaiku techniques and social network on a mobile device coming to you very soon.
