number of technologies which purport to measure aspects of personality. Personality measurement is much more prone to error in three principal ways. Firstly, there is a not a commonly accepted measurement of what the attributes of personality are and how they can be ranked and compared. For example most people have a pretty clear idea of what an attribute such as "outgoing" or "considerate" looks and feels like, but there would be less agreement as to what would constitute a "9" on "outgoingness" or a "3" on "consideration". Secondly, and more importantly, few businesses have a clear and robust articulation of which personality attributes correlate positively or negatively to role success. Thirdly there is the matter of instrument selection. There are many technologies in the market that assert

the ability to diagnose personality, but there is a huge variety in their validities. At the top of the market there are regulated psychometric instruments which have undergone in depth peer reviewed scientific studies. In the middle ground are some psychometrics which have not gained the costly certification from the British Psychological Society, but which are at least created on a scientific basis. At the other extreme there are still a number of pseudoscientific techniques that retain a level of popularity far in excess of their validity.

In conclusion, the task of deciding which candidates to select for employment is too important and too costly to leave to chance. The good news is that there is a weighty body of scientific evidence which clearly shows that some selection techniques are

superior to others. The challenge for business is to give up its costly addiction to amateurish investment decisions based on hunches, feelings and impressions in favour of applying some of the analytical rigour which is normally reserved for other business investments.
