How you can play your part in saving energy in Jersey


During the recession we might have convinced ourselves that an environmentally friendly lifestyle is a luxury available only to the time and resource rich and that it is an unrealistic aspiration for the average person on the street.

Buying a hybrid car or installing a wind turbine on your house may not be an option for you at the moment, however there are many ways to reduce energy consumption in your home that will save you money and should pay for themselves in the short term.


Energy efficiency is not a luxury but has an important role to play in domestic budgeting, and as such it has never been more important to consider than now, during a recession. By adopting energy saving measures in your home you are investing to save by reducing your long term outgoings and improving the value of your property.


Fewer people are looking to move house at the moment, but more people are instead considering home improvements and there’s a strong case for investing in energy efficiency.


We consider below what practical measures you can take to reduce the amount of energy you waste in your home, what savings such initiatives will deliver and we examine what financial


support is available from the States of Jersey to assist you in this.


Keeping the heat in Insulation is the key to home energy conservation. Heat flows from warm areas to cold ones and insulation makes it much more difficult for heat to escape by providing a layer of material which traps in the heat.


Around a third of all the heat lost in an un-insulated home is lost through the walls. If your property has an un-insulated cavity, specialised insulation material can be pumped into the cavity to reduce heat loss through the walls by up to 60%. According to the Energy Saving Trust cavity wall insulation could save you around £1101


a


year on fuel bills. There are a number of companies offering the cavity wall insulation services locally who will be happy to assess your
