months ahead, so it is down to availability, getting the right mix of art forms, is there any audience for the shows and calculating whether the deal is financially viable. It is a business with a very high risk factor – can we present shows that make money and will subsidise those that do not but which contribute to a varied programme?


Consultations may need to take place with the technical department to ensure that we can comply with all the technical requirements of the show. Do we need to hire in any equipment? If so, what and how much will it cost? Finally after several lengthy conversations with the agents, promoters or producers a date is set in the calendar. Alternatively an agent can ring with a comedy act if an agreed date can be found the deal can be completed in 5 minutes.


Then onto a meeting with the Marketing and Publicity Officer with the brochure deadline looming I need to pass all the incoming show information over to her so the production process of the next brochure can begin. The information also needs to be given to the administrator as part of her role is to draw up all the contracts for the shows and hires.


Monthly management accounts time again! Next, a meeting with the Financial Administrator to go over the monthly account. How has the business performed over the last month? Adjust the forecasts accordingly so that the Board of Directors and staff all have up to date financial information. Although we are part of the creative industries and a non profit organisation, we operate just like any other business. Keeping an eye on our specific market, identifying what shows may need that extra push, trying to maintain our edge during the current economic climate.


It is an exciting time for the Opera House at the moment as we were awarded some money through the States of Jersey Fiscal Stimulus fund to enable us to carry out some internal refurbishment which will enhance the facilities at the Opera House both for the customers and the staff. It will also provide us with a small scale performance space and a brand new space suitable for corporate hospitality and sponsorship opportunities.


The performance space will be used for workshops by visiting companies and available for hire by local dance tutors as it will have a fully sprung floor. I am currently engaged in regular weekly meetings with architects, quantity surveyors and mechanical and electrical engineers. The range of topics for discussion can cover anything from air cooling units, kitchen equipment, sound and lighting equipment, flooring and the finishing’s in the WC cubicles!!


Now it is 6pm, time to go out and get some tea in one of the great local restaurants and

then catch a show at 8pm. However, I do seem to spend at least 30% of my time watching the audience too. Are they enjoying themselves? Are they “getting it”? Breathing a sigh of relief when I realise everyone is having a good time. Now I can concentrate on the show.


Now its 10.30 pm and the show is finished. It is great to listen to the comments from the audience on the way out. The feedback is really useful both negative and positive as long as it is constructive. Now home with my long suffering partner to the cat and dog in Grouville ready to unwind (briefly) and do it all again the next day.


So, why do I do it? I thoroughly enjoy my job and realise how lucky I am as I know not all people feel this way. There is rarely a dull moment and I get to deal with a wide variety of issues throughout the day. I also have the good fortune to work with a small but very dedicated team of staff whose efforts and commitment mirror my own.
